Get Your OpenAI API Key

Why do I need an API key?

Website Modifier uses YOUR OpenAI account to generate content. This gives you full control over costs and ensures your privacy - we never see your transformations or API usage.

Get your free API key:

Create OpenAI account (if you don't have one)

Visit platform.openai.com/signup

Free to create • No credit card required to sign up

Add payment method & credits

Go to Billing Settings → Add payment method

Recommended: Start with $5-10 in credits

Create API key

Go to API Keys → Click "Create new secret key"

Give it a name like "Website Modifier"

Copy your API key

It looks like: sk-proj-abc123...

⚠️ Save it now - you can't view it again!

Configure the Extension

Enter your API key:

Click the extension icon

Find the Website Modifier icon in your Chrome toolbar (🧩 puzzle icon if you need to pin it)

Open Settings

Click "⚙️ Settings" at the bottom of the popup

Paste your API key

Enter your OpenAI API key in the "OpenAI API Key" field

It's stored locally in your browser only

Choose your models (optional)

Default: GPT-4 Turbo (text) + DALL-E 2 (images)

You can change these later

Click "Save Settings"

Your configuration is saved!

Create Your First Transformation

We recommend starting with a simple, harmless topic to test the extension:

Website: Any news site (CNN.com, BBC.com, etc.)

Step-by-step:

Navigate to any news article

Example: Visit bbc.com/news and open any article

Click the extension icon

The popup will open on top of the page

Select "Replace Mode"

This completely replaces the article content with a new topic

Enter your topic

Type: "Scientists discover cats can understand physics"

Choose settings (optional)

  • Article length: 1,000 words (default is fine)
  • Generate images: Leave unchecked for faster first test

Click "Transform Page"

Wait 20-30 seconds while the AI generates content

You'll see a progress indicator

The page content will be replaced with AI-generated text about cats and physics

Is my API key secure?

Yes! Your API key is stored locally in your browser using Chrome's encrypted storage. It's never sent anywhere except directly to OpenAI's servers. We never see or store your API key.

How much will OpenAI charge me?

A typical transformation costs $0.10-$0.50 depending on article length and whether you generate images. You can use cheaper models (GPT-3.5) and disable images to reduce costs. View cost calculator

Can others see my transformations?

No! Transformations only exist in YOUR browser. They're not published anywhere. Refreshing the page restores the original content.

What if transformation fails?
